Support to Spanish Presidency’s draft Conclusions to reduce health inequalities
01/04/2010

The Spanish Presidency of the EU (first semester 2010) made the reduction of health inequalities a priority. For this aim, and in parallel with a process initiated by the European Commission, a report and draft recommendations have been prepared by the Spanish presidency. This should lead to Conclusions that will be voted by the Council of Ministries of Health of the EU in June 2010. One of these recommendations concerns universal access to health care for children and pregnant women irrespective of their residence status. These recommendations will be discussed during a Ministerial Panel of 21-22 April 2010 and the informal meeting of ministers of health on 23rd of April. The HUMA Network addressed a position paper to the participants of the meeting, urging all Member States to support the Spanish Presidency’s draft conclusion on universal access to health care for children and pregnant women.

The DG SANCO Consultation - Determining Legal Instruments for the EU
15/05/2009

Determining binding legal instrument, within the EU so that undocumented migrants may access to health care is not formally an EU issue, but rather a national issue. However, it is linked to the fight against illegal immigration as well as to public health, which both are EU issues in some aspects.

So is the EU Commission (DG SANCO) preparing a Communication aiming to support the reduction of health inequalities in the EU. The HUMA network contributed and is following the process in order to make sure that legal and practical difficulties encountered by undocumented migrants are taken into consideration.

European elections campaign
20/04/2009

The HUMA network targeted over 140 candidate MEPs from 7 European Union Member States and asked them whether as MEPs “they would be willing to stand up for all those living in Europe to receive equal access to health care, including undocumented migrants”?

Of the 46 candidates who answered us, near unanimously in an unequivocal positive way, 30 were elected (see right column). These will soon join GUE/NGL(6), PES(11), EFA/Greens(5), ALDE(3) or EPP(4). We will get or remain in contact with these MEPs as soon as they will take office, to turn this commitment into reality.
