EU amends reception conditions for asylum seekers

Access to health care for asylum seekers, within the EU, is determined by directive 2003/9/EC of 27 January 2003.

The EU Commission prepared a recast of this directive presented on the 3 of December 2008, which has been discussed and amended by the European Parliament. It is now under discussion at Council level.

Member States shall provide necessary medical or other assistance to applicants who have special needs, including appropriate mental health care when needed, under the same conditions as nationals. 2. The definition of health care benefits remains unchanged.
