The HUMA network project, a network initiated by Médecins du Monde, and composed of 16 partners in 16 EU countries, promoted the access to healthcare for undocumented migrants and asylum seekers on an equal basis with nationals within the EU from 2008 till 2011. March 2011 corresponded to the end of the project, but not of Médecins du Monde and the other partners' commitment to the health of migrants and of all vulnerable groups at national and European level!
The HUMA network's main objectives were:
- Guarantee effective access to health care and prevention for all undocumented migrants and asylum seekers on equal grounds as nationals with the same level of resources; Address specific needs of vulnerable groups (pregnant women, children and victims of torture)
- Grant a permit/authorisation to stay to seriously ill undocumented migrants unless it is thoroughly and objectively proved that they are able to receive access to treatment in country of origin
- Ensure effective access to health care to foreigners confined in detention centres/waiting areas AND permanent access to detention centres by NGOs
